The US Department of Agriculture has recently officially recognized the equivalent of Vietnam's catfish food safety control system (ATTP) for export to the US. This decision has received acclaim from American importers and consumers.
The United States has long been one of the largest export markets for Vietnam's seafood and catfish. Catfish products, particularly basa fish of Vietnam have gradually won the hearts of many consumers and have been present in many supermarkets and stores in many US states.
Not only available at supermarkets and shops in the US, Vietnamese basa fish has also been included in the menu of many Asian restaurants and has become one of the most popular dishes for diners.
The US Department of Agriculture's decision is good news not only for Vietnamese catfish producers, processors and exporters but also for US seafood importers, who always appreciate quality of products from Vietnam.
John Connelly, President of the National Institute of Fisheries said, "We found this to be an encouraging decision. The US government's recognition of Vietnam's equivalent catfish food safety system has reduced concerns about the capacity of Vietnamese Basa fish exporters.
I think this is a good opportunity for Vietnam's catfish industry and basa fish to be able to continue exporting high quality products to the US. Vietnam's catfish is of high quality and is an important part of the US market when compared to other whitefish, including US catfish. American consumers are quite fond of Vietnamese catfish. ”
Many US seafood importers believe that the decision of the US Department of Agriculture is entirely right because from their experience, they always appreciate the efforts of Vietnamese businesses in improving safety and food hygiene to achieve the highest export quality.
Mr. Todd Clark, founder and partner of Endeavor Seafood Import and Advertise Seafood Company, said his company has cooperated with Vietnamese companies in the past 10 years and he highly appreciates the seafood products of Vietnam.
“Vietnam's seafood products are amazing. The processing plants of Vietnam have been constantly updated with high technology and are very impressive. I visited a number of processing factories in Vietnam and found that the quality was improved, the hygiene was good and the management was very good. I would love to continue working with Vietnamese companies, ”Mr. Clark said.
When being recognized equivalent, Vietnam will be adding more businesses to register to export pangasius to the US and more importantly, create confidence for US importers to be assured to import, help increase production and value export this type of product to the US market in the near future.
The established Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology to assess the fishmeal carbon footprint only accounts for the vessel fuel and post-harvest processing energy while ignoring the carbon sequestration potential of fish.
