PANGASIUS EXPORTS ARE RECEIVING GOOD SIGNALS FROM SOME MAJOR MARKETS
04 Tue, 2020
As of mid-March 2020, the total export value of pangasius reached USD 267.8 million, with no signs of recovery compared to the same period last year. The Covid-19 pandemic is still affecting exports in some market areas around the world. However, in these difficulties, Pangasius export is seeing good signs from some big markets like the US and China.
According to statistics of the Vietnam Customs, in the first half of March 2020, the export value of pangasius to the US market increased by 18.8% over the same period last year. This is an optimistic signal for pangasius exporting enterprises to the US in the context of the whole year of 2019, the value of pangasius export to this market decreased. As of mid-March 2020, the US is Vietnam's largest pangasius export market, accounting for 18.8% of the total pangasius export value.
According to some pangasius exporting enterprises, since February 2020, pangasius export to China - Hong Kong has restarted and export activities are gradually returning to normal. In the first half of March 2020, the export value of pangasius to this market was nearly US $ 13 million, an increase of US $ 1 million compared to the previous month of February 2020. If the export speed increases as expected, some pangasius export enterprises confidently stated that pangasius export value to China in the coming months may increase by 40-50%.
Optimistic light is returning in some markets hoping to boost production activities and export again in the near future. Currently, the price of raw material pangasius in the Mekong Delta is still around VND 18,000 - VND 18,800 / kg. This is a lower price than the same period last year but has begun to stabilize in the past 2 months. Due to saline intrusion, some export markets are temporarily settling down, causing both factories and farmers to slow down the pond. Harvest output is expected in the next 2 months reduced. However, this is a condition for raw material pangasius prices to increase in the near future.
In some other major export markets such as EU, ASEAN, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Australia, it still decreased. As of the first half of March 2020, pangasius export to ASEAN decreased by 25.2%; EU decreased by 47.3%; Brazil decreased by 14.3%, Mexico decreased by 57.5% over the same period last year. The situation of Covid-19 disease is greatly affecting the EU market when transportation and forwarding activities cannot be done due to the lockdown policy to control the disease. However, at present, the demand for seafood products, including pangasius in European supermarkets is on the rise.
Not only are Vietnamese pangasius products affected by the disease, Russian white fish products are also being discounted by Chinese processing factories that closed during the first two months of the year and reopened. . Before going to work, all workers of factories in China were isolated for 14 days, the shortage of workers also made the factory not really stable production. However, since March 2020, Chinese white fish and tilapia processing plants have also been stable.
In the short term, in April 2020, it is possible that in some export markets, the export value of pangasius continues to decrease compared to the same period last year due to the disruption of cargo transportation activities, but the actions have prospered from some big markets, businesses can recognize the positive in the coming time. Currently, in order to continue accompanying the Government in social distancing, pangasius enterprises need to continue propagating and encouraging workers to voluntarily comply with, fully implement measures to protect themselves and protect the general health protection of the plant.
The established Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology to assess the fishmeal carbon footprint only accounts for the vessel fuel and post-harvest processing energy while ignoring the carbon sequestration potential of fish.
